View Full Version : Country Music - does it really need to be censored?

You rarely hear any "foul language" in Country Music... I find it somewhat amusing when I hear different versions of country songs on the radio...

Some examples -

Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia
they way I know it: "I done told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been."
censored version: "I done told you once, you sone of a gun, I'm the best that's ever been."

Taylor Swift - Picture to Burn
the way I know it: "So go and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy, That's fine I'll tell mine you're gay"
censored version: "So go and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy, That's fine and don't mind if I say...."

and what I've just heard....

Zac Brown Band - Toes
the way I know it: "I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand..."
what I just heard on Go Country: "I got my toes in the water...toes in the sand"

I mean....I guess SOME people could be offended by the original words / lyrics. But they say "bitch" and "ass" on prime time TV all the time?! I think that's why I don't get it. They say sh*t on basic cable - not just for HBO anymore... I'm pretty sure they've played Toby Keith's Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue on the radio with the "boot in your ass" not censored - but maybe that's just after a certain time in the evening?

Anyone heard any other censored versions that they were kinda surprised by?

I too think it's pretty silly, considering rock songs can say God-damn with no censorship, and rap is way less censored as well. I think it's just silly, but I haven't noticed it on the radio too much I guess. CDB I've noticed, but I haven't heard ZBB censored version yet.

Looking For a Good Time by Lady Antebellum also has one line that's censored.

Original Version: "Would you get the wrong impression if I called us a cab right now"

Censored Version: "Would you get the wrong impression if I asked you to dance right now"

Yeah it sucks...but I "think" it may be that country is considered "family" music and the stations sensor it to appeal to the families...and for some part...I agree. It is nice to hear some clean music sometimes. And if I want "dirty" music, I listen to the CD ...hahaha

Country is considered pure to a sense. I loved that George Straits move "pure country" was "pure".

Yet another reason satellite radio kicks all sorts of terrestrial radio's ass.

This is a really good point KL....times don't change, just the judges.

Wake up little susie was banned back in the day. Elvis was only allowed to be filmed from the waste up. Lucy & Ricky had to be in separate beds even though they were married and god forbid that we could see I dream of Jeanie's belly button.

"Family values" are of the eyes of the beholder. What's O.k. for you may not be O.k. for me.

Did you guys also know that the song by Billy Currington's 'people are crazy', is censored.
It was originally done as "beer is good, and Women[girls] are crazy" lol! Apparently is was edited due to 'discrimination' against women. LOL
